TastersGuildNY Prized Wines from Domaine Drouhin Oregon
Date: Tuesday April 19, 2016
Location: Estonian House, 243 East 34th Street (2nd/3rd Ave)
Time: 6:30 PM

Speaker: Speaker William Short, Regional Manager Dreyfus Ashby & Co

Established in 1987, Domaine Drouhin Oregon is owned by famed Burgundy producer, Maison Joseph Drouhin. Hand-crafted by fourth generation winemaker, Veronique Drouhin-Boss, the distinctive Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays of Domaine Drouhin are prized for their elegance, balance and finesse, as well as their ability to age. Philippe Drouhin, Veronique's brother, is in charge of viticulture and has earned an international reputation for his work both in Burgundy and Oregon. Ninety acres of the 225-acre estate are now planted, with over 3100 vines per acre in the heart of the Dundee Hill. In late 2013 Domaine Drouhin added the 279 acre Roserock vineyard in Eola-Amity Hills to its estate holdings in Dundee Hills.

It’s about this family, and this place. The combination of the Drouhins’ 135 year history of winemaking with this exceptional vineyard in the Eola Hills is something special. At Roserock, as at DDO, Véronique serves as head winemaker, bringing her decades of experience and highly focused palate to these new Drouhin wines. As at DDO, these wines reflects the unique characteristics of an outstanding terroir.

Roserock reflects the singular Drouhin approach. It’s a matter of family pride: pride in grapes that are grown responsibly with seasoned expertise in wine making that celebrates patience and nuance; in wines that are elegant, balanced, complex and age-worthy and defined by finesse. The Drouhin Family’s bold decision to buy land in the Dundee Hills in 1987 is considered a seminal event in the history of the Oregon wine industry, forever establishing the Burgundy/Oregon connection. RoseRock reaffirms the family’s commitment to Oregon, while creating an exciting new chapter of the Drouhin story: French Soul, Oregon Soil.

Please join us in experiencing the elegance and finesse of these acclaimed Domaine Drouhin Oregon Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs.

TastersGuildNY Domaine Orenga de Gaffory Award Winning Wines from Corsica
Date: Tuesday, October 28, 2014
Location: Estonian House, 243 East 34th Street (2nd/3rd Ave)
Time: 6:30 PM

Speaker: Anne Orenga de Gaffory, Owner

Orenga de Gaffory family owns one of the most beautiful wine estates in Corsica situated in the heart of the magnificent Patrimonio region. Created in the 1960’s on chalky-clay soils, this 72-hectare vineyard includes a number of individual plots, located between the communes of Saint-Florent, Patrimonio, Oletta, Barbaggio and Poggio d’Oletta. This geographic diversity creates ‘micro terroirs’, which produces blends with complexity in terms of structure, balance and aromas.

The vineyard plots are planted with the best traditional Corsican grape varieties; Vermentinu for the AOC White Patrimonio; Niellucciu for the AOC Red and Rosé Patrimonio; Muscat à Petit Grains for the AOC Muscat du Cap Corse.

These varieties are accompanied by Grenache Noir which has always been used in the blends from Patrimonio.

As a result, Domaine Orenga de Gaffory produces a selection of wines constituting

Three wine families:
  • Cuvée Orenga de Gaffory: fruity and floral whites, rosés, and fortified Muscats; ample and rich reds.
  • Cuvée Felice: boasting grape varieties of full and expressive characteristics.
  • Cuvée des Gouverneurs; age-worthy wines, barrel aged whites and Muscat, oak-aged reds.
Join us for a delightful tasting of floral rosés, big reds and elegant and honey hued whites.

A wide choice in vineyard sites allows specialization by grape variety at key locations. Only fruit from the best locations is selected for the Saint Clair label.

Saint Clair produces a number of varietals that are available in four ranges at varying price levels: Vicar’s Choice, Saint Clair Premium, Saint Clair Pioneer Block & Saint Clair Reserve. Each of these wines is made with fruit from specific vineyard sites in Marlborough specially selected for their ability to produce wines of uncompromising 90 plus quality making St Clair Estate one of the top estates in New Zealand.

Hope Estate Hunter Valley Australia was founded by Michael Hope where he’s built one of the Hunter’s most successful family owned wineries. Based in Broke for the last decade, Michael’s wines are perhaps better known overseas than in Australia.

Join us for a fun filled tasting of 90 point plus New Zealand wines and fantastic Chardonnay and Shiraz from Australia.

Location: Estonian House, 243 East 34st (2nd/3rd)
Time: 6:30 PM

Speaker: Leandro Lowi Wine Ambassador Familia Zuccardi Estates

Familia Zuccardi, Argentina's largest family-owned winery is one of the leading exporters of Argentine wines. For over 40 years, Familia Zuccardi has produced wines of exceptional quality and value from the soils of Maipu and Santa Rosa. Every wine at Familia Zuccardi is from estate grown, hand-picked fruit and is estate produced in a state-of-the-art facility. In total, there are 1,600 acres of noble grapes under cultivation. Innovation is a trademark of Familia Zuccardi. Experimentation with new plantings is vital to their quest for quality. Successful experiments have yielded the first Viognier from Argentina as well as a popular Pinot Grigio and a port-styled Malbec (called Malamado).. While the entire estate operates under sustainable agricultural practices, half of the vineyards are certified organic. At Familia Zuccardi, when it comes to producing world class Argentine wine, they take their job seriously. Their philosophy is simple. As Jose Zuccardi puts it, "The word 'family' is central to the way in which we have always run our business. To guarantee the quality of our Familia Zuccardi brand, we believe in using people rather than machines whenever possible.". There are several distinct lines under the Zuccardi brand available in the US: Santa Julia Varietal, Organicica, Reserva: Zuccardi Serie A, Zuccardi Q, and Zeta an icon wine made from Tempanillo/Malbec blend, Zuccardi Serie A, Zuccardi Q, and Zuccard Zeta are the premium ranges of wines produced by Familia Zuccardi. The grapes for these ranges come from 100% Estate owned high altitude vineyards in the Uco Valley and Salta regions. Each vineyard site is selected for its unique micro-climate, soil, and overall quality. On December 2012, Wine Spectator gave 90 points to Zuccardi Zeta 2009, and Wine Advocate gave 90 points to Zacardi Q Cabernet Sauvignon and 93 points to Zuccardi Alluvonial. Please join us in tasting 10 of Familia Zuccardi superb wines.

Portfolio Director & Director of Wine Education: Ian Ribowsky

Hailed as “the winemaking wizard” of the Rhône, Jean-Luc Colombo has achieved a high-profile international reputation for innovative wines, bursting with personality. A native of Marseilles, Colombo developed a strong admiration for the wines of the Rhône Valley in the late 1970s. A devotee of the Syrah grape, he was convinced that the northern Rhône appellation of Cornas offered enormous potential for producing stellar quality Syrah. Following his conviction, he opened his own wine laboratory in Cornas and developed a thriving reputation as a wine consultant, breathing new life into the then-obscure wines of Cornas, producing the first vintage of his signature wine Les Ruchets in 1987.

Shortly after, Colombo began purchasing his own vineyards first in Cornas then throughout the Rhône Valley and Provence. The wines of Vins Jean-Luc Colombo are all highly personalized, sourced from Colombo’s own vineyards and from carefully selected domains under his direct consultation.

Jean-Luc Colombo has made a major impact on the evolution of modern French winemaking, and he and his wife Anne, have both received the French Legion of Honor Award reflecting this contribution. We will taste a vertical of Colombo’s signature vineyard Cornas wine Les Ruchets as well as prestigious appellations throughout the Rhone Valley including Cote Rotie, Crozes Hermitage, Hermitage, St Peray, Condrieu, Chateauneuf-du-Pape among others. Join us for this exquisite tour of the Rhone Valley!
