Tuesday February 23, 2010

Speaker: Blanca Valbuena, Ironstone Vineyard NY Manager

The Kautz Family, owners and operators of Ironstone Vineyards, has been producing high quality; premium California wines for three generations and is celebrating this tradition by expanding their portfolio with Christine Andrew, a new wine brand named for the family's fourth generation. In addition to the Ironstone Vineyards label, Christine Andrews includes 6 varietal grapes from the best growing regions of California. Ironstone Reserve Chardonnay 2000 was the favorite White. Ironstone Meritage Reserve 05 was the favorite Red and Ironstone Cabernet Franc Reserve 07 placed second favorite Red. Everyone liked Ironstone Symphony Obsession 08. We were all impressed with the quality and affordability of Ironstone and Christine Andrews wines.

Ironstone Sauvignon Blanc 06
Bright, pale straw color, this medium-bodied wine is clean and fresh with aromas of peach, lime, gooseberry, hay, and lightly toasted almond. On the palate it is clean and zesty with Meyer lemon, lime, kiwi, guava and peach notes, which continue on to the long, lively, tropical finish.
4 $8.00 - $9.00
Ironstone Chardonnay 08
Aromas of pears, green apples, and toffee. Peaches on the palate. 3 months in oak. Mild acidity. Crisp to tart balance with a creamy, medium length finish.
4 $8.00 - $9.00
Ironstone Reserve Chardonnay 2000
From grapes grown in Ironstones mountain vineyards located in the Sierra Foothills, these prime Chardonnay clusters are hand selected for their outstanding quality and then experience a gentle, whole-cluster pressing. The wine is aged “sur lie” in new French oak barrels that are hand stirred weekly for the initial four months of the aging process. This process causes the wine to undergo spontaneous malolactic fermentation.

In order to develop this wines’ complexity and full-bodied flavors, the casks are stored in underground wine caverns for twelve months where the temperature remains a constant 60° degrees Fahrenheit year-round. The 2000 Reserve Chardonnay is then bottle-aged for an additional four months prior to its release.

The Reserve Chardonnay has an extremely concentrated tropical fruit flavor with nuances of butterscotch, vanilla and ripe apple. The nose opens with scents of butterscotch and vanilla followed by exotic notes of spice. Creamy, buttery. Lovely. The favorite of this Flight.

7 $17.00

Ironstone Old Vine Zinfandel Reserve 2007
The Vineyards ~ Twisted, gnarly, head-trained Zinfandel vines, 60-80 years old, located in the Mokelumne River sub-appellation of the Lodi AVA, produced magnificent grape clusters used in this wine. Lodi, with its classic Mediterranean climate and an alluvial fan of sandy loam, well-drained soils has been an ideal growing region for world-class Zinfandels for over a century.

Rich and ripe, this generous Zinfandel offers hugh aromas and flavors of ripe blackberries, pepper and chocolate, finishing with well-rounded tannins and a lingering dark, fruit finish.

Christine Andrew Old Vine Zinfandel 2007
Produced from fully mature grapes, from 60-70 year-old head-trained vines, that were hand selected by the winemaker. After undergoing extended fermentation and maceration, the wine was aged in French and American oak for 18 months with additional bottle aging prior to release.
