Germany is a nation of small growers. The estate and wine maker is a key ingredient in the selection process in German wine. We tasted 9 wines selected from the greatest estates of Germany. Dr. H Thanisch, Mosel, Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler, Mosel, Georg Albrecht Schneider, Rheinhessen, Heinz Eifel Silvaner, Rheinhessen and Fitz-Ritter, Pfalz Region.

Dr H. Thanisch Riesling Bernkastler Doctor 2008 was the favorite Mosel Kabinett. Georg Albecht Schneider Riesling Neirsteiner Paterburg Riesling Spatlese 2009 was the favorite Spatlese. Dr. Pauly Bergweiler Whelener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese 2009 was a close second. Heinz Eifel Silvaner Beerenauslese 2009 tied for favorite Dessert wine with Heinz Eifel Silvaner Eiswein Dec 18 2009. Everyone liked Fitz Ritter Gewurztraminer Spatlese 20010 and everyone liked Fitz Ritter Sekt NV Trocken Sparkling. All the cheese was provided by Cabot Cheese Vermont.

Fitz Ritter Sekt NV Trocken - Pfalz
Fitz-Ritter was one of the earliest producers of German Sekt (Sparkling Wine). This quality Sekt, produced from 100% old-vine Riesling, was grown in the sunny microclimate of the Middle-Haardt region. It is crisp and dry while bursting with the fruitiness of ripe Riesling. Serve this exciting, dry Riesling Sekt with appetizers, sushi, seafood and greens.

Gold color, rose petals, apricots, spice, on nose and palate. Sweet and round and rich. with ginger and smoke and spice in the finish

Rich and complex. Mineral, peach, pear, and an elegant, crisp, long finish of ginger and baked apple.

Petral, smoky, spice on the nose. On the palate, ripe berries and dried fruit highlighted by a balanced acidity and minerality. This wine pairs well with seafood, sushi, and food that is a bit spicy. The favorite of this flight.

Bollig - Lehnert Trittenheimer Apotheke Riesling Kabinett 2009
Stylish and crisp with a fruity elegance and good mineral content. The ripe acidity gives the wine plenty of maturing potential. Stelvin closure is used to seal the wine.

Dr. Pauly Bergweiler Whelener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese 2009 (Mosel)
The nose is a mixture of brown spices, golden apple and citrus aromas. Ripe and sweet, yet vibrant and focused, with a palate of apple and apricot flavors. The wine has intensity and length. Luscious! Placed a close second.

Georg Albecht Schneider Riesling Neirsteiner Paterburg Riesling Spatlese 2009
Red sandstone soil. Fruit, with long, lush flavors of ripe peach, apple and apricot. Very creamy, leading to hints of white chocolate on the rich finish. The favorite of this Flight.

Heinz Eifel Silvaner Beerenauslese 2009 (Rheinheissen)
Heinz Eifel Beerenauslese is produced in very small quantity and only when the weather and vineyard have suitable conditions, such as 2009. Clear yellow gold with a slight green tinge, this 100% Silvaner has aromas and flavors of honey and caramelized fruit. Enjoy with aged cheeses and other complimentary desserts. Tied for favorite dessert wine.

Heinz Eifel Silvaner Eiswein Dec 18 2009 (Rheinheissen)
The Heinz Eifel Eiswein (Ice Wine) is a gastronomic specialty made from handpicked frozen grapes. These frozen grapes produce only a small amount of highly concentrated juice. Eiswein can age for many years or can be enjoyed now. This Eiswein was harvested from sandy/gravelly soils in the Rheinhessen in the early AM hours at the frigid temperature of below 14F with an astounding concentration of 145 Oechsle (over 33 Brix). This 100% Silvaner Eiswein shows sweet baked apple and citrus zest on the nose. The palate is medium sweet with ripe apple and light butterscotch flavors. Has a soft, dry finish. Enjoy with blue cheese, fruit desserts or as dessert on its own. Tied for favorite dessert wine.
