TastersGuildNY Sartori di Verona Italian Wines including Single-Vineyard Corte Bra Amarone della Valpolicella

Tuesday March 16, 2010

Speaker: Roland Marandino, Ambassador for Sartori di Verona

Sartori, a leading name in fine wines from northeast Italy’s Veneto region, has stood for vision, innovation, and a boundless passion for quality winemaking. A constant theme over the last century has been the Sartori family’s bond with their land: it is a heritage that has evolved and finds expression in Sartori’s range of classic Veronese wines made from indigenous grapes, as well as in Sartori’s interpretation of international grape varieties, all produced under the guidance of superstar consulting winemaker, Franco Bernabei. We tasted 11 award winning wines.

Sartori Ferdi Garganega Bianco Veronese IGT 2007 was the favorite White. Sartori Pinot Noir Provincia di Pavia IGT 2008 was the favorite Red Terroir Flight and Sartori Regolo Corvina Rosso Veronese IGT 2005 and Sartori Corte Bra Amarone della Valpolicella DOC 2003 tied for favorite of the Corvina Flight. Everyone liked Villa Marzia Limoncello. We were all impressed with the innovation and quality of Sartori di Veronas wines.

Select hand picked grapes are dried for 40 days to reduce water and concentrate sugar content and color. They are subsequently pressed followed by short skin maceration at a low temperature. Part of the must is fermented in oak casks: the remainder in stainless steel. The wine then matures on its lees for 6 to 7 months for added mouthfeel, flavor and intensity. A minimum of 2 or 3 months of bottle refinement follows.

Brilliant yellow color. Aromas of pears and apricots with floral notes. Opulent, rich, fruit flavor, dry, balanced, with a long finish. The favorite of this Flight.

Flight II: The Red Terroir Flight Votes Full Retail $
Verdissimo Merlot-Refosco delleVenezie IGT 2008
70% Merlot, 30% red-stalked Refosco. Organically grown.

The two grapes are harvsted at the same time which makes for a super ripe Merlot since the Refosco ripens later. A slow maceration produces excellent color. One third of the wine matures in oak barrels, and the other two thirds in stainless for about 4 to 6 months.

This preserves the fruit character of the grapes, while gaining structure and complexity from the oak. A small period of bottle aging follows. Intense red color. Aromas of herbs and woodland fruits. Palate is black fruit and berry flavors with black pepper on the finish. Drink young.
