TastersGuildNY Valkenberg Tasting of 12 German Outstanding Wines

TastersGuildNY Valkenberg Tasting of 12 German Outstanding Wines

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Speaker: Jack Hecker, Portfolio Manager Valkenberg International Inc.

The Grape Debate Where or When?
Which is more important: Where the grape is picked (terroir) or how long the grape hangs on the vine before harvesting? The tasting addressed this issue and provided a simple format for deciphering German wine styles. Our speaker took us through a comparison of the wine making regions and the different levels of ripeness of German wines.

We tasted 14 wines from the Mosel, Rheingau, Franken and Baden. from QBA, Kabinett, Spatlese and Auslese levels from Riesling and Sylvaner to Pinot Noir. Maximin Grunhauser Superior 2007 (Mosel-Ruwer) was the favorite from the Silvaner and QBA Flight. Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch Bernkastler Doctor 2004 (Mosel) was the favorite Kabinett. von Kesselstatt Piesporter Goldtropchen 2006 (Mosel) was the favorite Spatlese. JJ Prum Graacher Himmelreich 2008 was the favorite Auslese. Most people did not like Castell Reitsteig 2005 Pinot Noir (Franken). It was made for the German palate. All the wines showed well and the evening was both extremely informative and entertaining.
