TastersGuildNY Oregon: Small Pinot Noir Producers from the Willamette Valley

TastersGuildNY Oregon: Small Pinot Noir Producers from the Willamette Valley

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

In just 40 years Oregon has evolved into a world-class wine growing state with 15 approved winegrowing regions, and more than 300 wineries producing wine from 72 grape varieties. As a wine region it will continue to grow and evolve, but Oregon will always be a place where small, handcrafted wines reign, where collaboration and community are key, and where the growers and winemakers are never far away from the tasting room.

We met two of Oregon’s unique, and highly educated, personalities and tasted 10 wines from the most well known region of Oregon, the Willamette Valley.

Cubanisimo Pinot Gris- 2009 was the favorite White. Z’IVO Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills – 2006 was the favorite Pinot Noir. Z’IVO Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills 2008 placed second. Cubanisimo Estate- Pinot Noir 2008 and Z’IVO Whole Cluster Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills 2008 tied for third; and everyone liked the Z’IVO Riesling Columbia Valley,WA 2008 and the Cubanisimo Rosado de Pinot Noir 2009 All the cheese was provided by Cabot Cheese Vermont.

Pale white, floral aroma. It is a blend of Pinot Gris clones that provide an elegant, floral, dry wine with tropical flavors. This wine comes from the Eola Hills region. It is bottled for Cubanisimo, and sold direct from the winery. It is intensely aromatic with lovely pears and grapefruit in the nose. It displays a generous amount of pear, green apple, and a touch of pineapple flavors which linger in the mouth. It is perfect for salmon, crab, oysters, or pesto chicken. Limited production. The favorite of this flight.

Bold, floral aromas and complex flavors of fruit, and honey melds with peach nectar on the palate. A lovely Auslese like wine.

Cubanisimo Rosado de Pinot Noir 2009
The Rosado de Pinot Noir is a light, dry Rosado made in the classic European style. Made from 100% Estate Pinot Noir grapes, the Rosado de Pinot Noir represents a different, lighter development of flavors from the vineyard. The Rosado is made by shortening the grape skin and grape juice contact time on initial fermentation – roughly overnight, allows a pink color and a complexity of flavors found only among dry Rosados.

This wine opens with a floral bouquet & slight fruit aromas of raspberry & hints of peach that introduce the tastes of grapefruit and pomegranate and a lingering touch of vanilla.

11 $20.00
Flight III
Z'IVO Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills - 2006
Ruby red color. A luscious blend of 5 Pinot Noir clones. The younger vines contribute great juicy fruitiness to blend with the minerality, black fruit flavors, mature tannic structure, and long finish of the older vines. The favorite of this flight.

This wine is a powerhouse with commanding fruit flavors, including black & bing cherry, black current and a hint of caramel.
